Some airlines see booking late as a possible sign of desperation and are not willing to reduce their published rates for travel and if the destination is popular the rates most likely will not be cut. However, as the date of departure approaches, many airlines are willing to offer discount airfares to fill the plane instead of having it take off with fewer passengers.

Airline travel is one of the modes of transportation that rarely cancels a trip due to lack of riders. For example, leaving at noon may cost full price on the plane, but leaving at midnight may garner discount airfares from the same airline on the same destination.
